Last week, we spoke with Dr. Mike Jorgensen from the Washington School District regarding a possible change in the school day. Dr. Jorgensen states there is a proposal in the current legislature of changing the school year in Iowa from days to hours. He says if this proposal passes the House, it would not impact the Washington School District at this time. Dr. Jorgensen says this ruling could affect rural districts more.
He adds this bill could have an impact regarding snow days. Dr. Jorgensen says since students have more than 5 and a half hours of teaching time a day, this new rule would allow the district to “build up” hours to the point that if a snow day were to happen, they might not have to make it up.
He says it is still too early to know if changing to an hourly schedule versus a daily schedule would be an advantage.
