Checking For Moisture In Grain Bins

With the large amounts of snow we have experienced the last few weeks, the ISU Extension is reminding producers to check their grain bins for blown in snow. ISU Ag Engineering Field Specialist Greg Brenneman says if any snow that has blown in has melted, it could spoil grain later this spring if it is not dealt with now. He says this week’s weather should provide a good chance to check for any moisture left behind from the melting snow.
Brenneman says when the temperatures get above freezing, aeration fans can be run to help evaporate any moisture left from the melted snow. He also recommends cooling the grain back down to the 25 to 35 degree range for storage into the spring and summer months.
