Earlier this week, Senator Matt McCoy introduced a proposal to eliminate more than 200 school superintendents in the state in an effort to save money.  Senator McCoy is proposing only one superintendent per county.  Mid-Prairie Superintendent Mark Schneider feels that saving money with this consolidation may or may not be true.

He says in some counties, they would only need one superintendent, but in other counties, associate superintendents would be needed because of the number of students and schools within that county.  Schneider adds another issue would be districts that are in more than one county.  He says that would have to be dealt with if the proposal goes forward.

Washington School Board President Eric Turner says he doesn’t see much of an impact on Washington Schools in the short term with this plan.  He says as a board member he is concerned about all of the logistics that would go with the plan.

Turner says if this proposal does go forward, he is hoping to have the support in the administrative team to handle any changes that would occur.  This bill, if it passes, would take effect in 2013.
