Today is Presidents’ Day, a day that was created to honor George Washington. Congress first implemented this day in 1885 for all federal offices. The Uniform Monday Holiday Act that was signed into law in June of 1968 moved today’s holiday to the third Monday in February effective January 1, 1971.
Not only is today a day to honor the accomplishments of President Washington, it is also a tribute to the general who created the first military badge of merit for the common soldier. The Purple Heart is a medal that shows an image of Washington and is awarded to soldiers that have been injured in battle.
While some businesses and government offices are closed, many are open today. Here is a list of closures that we have received:
Washington County Courthouse
Washington City Hall
Washington County Conservation Board
Keokuk County Courthouse
