Middle School students in one school district in central Iowa will see changes in the way they are graded in school starting next fall.  Superintendent Mark Schneider with the Mid-Prairie School District says changing the way students are graded in school could have a positive effect for students.  He says while the Waukee School District has changed their grading system, he is not sure if this system would work in the Mid-Prairie School District any time soon.

Schneider says if this change should take place, the way classes are taught would have to be changed.  He says the classes would be more competency based and it would create more diverse learning.

Schneider says students who are self-motivated and can learn easily would do well with this type of system.  He says students in high school could graduate earlier with this type of system if all of the competencies would be met.

Schneider notes if this type of grading system were to be presented to him, he would take the time to investigate the benefits and drawbacks to the idea.
