A scam has been circulating recently about purchasing deeds.  These unsolicited letters state you must have your deed to prove you own your property and will provide you with a copy for a large fee.  Fauna Nissley with Washington Title Company says she has not heard about these letters, but says deeds can be provided through your county courthouse or attorney.

She says it does not cost hundreds of dollars to get a copy.  Washington County Recorder Jo Greiner says the only charge to get a copy of your deed is a copy or faxing fee.

She adds they can provide copies of any deed back to 1840.  Greiner says deeds are public documents and anyone can come in and look at them.  She notes this scam does go around every few years and to be wary of them.
