March is Flood Awareness Month in Iowa, and state officials say one of the most important things people can do is look into flood insurance. Juli Probasco-Sowers from the Rebuild Iowa Office says they decided to choose March because the biggest worry for the time of flooding is between mid-March and mid-April. She says another reason for selecting March is because there is a 30-day timeframe to obtain insurance through the National Flood Insurance Program.
Probasco-Sowers says the average per year for flood insurance is $765, but she says that changes depending the flood risks associated where you are located. She adds in the last 10 years, about 20% of the damage has occurred in the low to moderate risk areas for flooding.
Probasco-Sowers shares more about flooding and Flood Awareness Month during today’s In Touch With Southeast Iowa program.
