The Mount Pleasant Panther boys basketball team is headed back to state. Mount Pleasant finished third last season after losing to the Pella Little Dutch in the semifinals. They had also lost to Pella in the regular season. The Panthers returned everyone from last year’s team, and early this season they lost again to Pella.
Last night the Panthers needed to beat the Little Dutch to get back to state. In a low scoring game, Mount Pleasant held Pella to just five points in the third quarter and went up by 13 early in the fourth. The Little Dutch came back and had a one point lead with under a minute to go. On a trip to the free throw line, the Panthers got a big offensive rebound off a miss and turned into a layup that put them up by one. Pella called a time out and ran one last play but the Panthers forced a turnover to give them the 43-42 win.
So Mount Pleasant moves on to Des Moines with a 22-2 record where they will open with 21-3 MOC-Floyd Valley on Wednesday. The Panthers are the #3 seed in the tournament. Their two losses came to Pella and Linn-Mar. Waverly-Shell Rock at 24-0 will be the one seed.
Also last night Dubuque Wahlert beat Solon 62-49.
