Iowa’s Spring turkey season is next month and the Iowa Department of Natural Resources is passing along regulation and safety reminders.  Louisa County Conservation Officer Ben Schlader says the youth hunting season is Saturday, April 9th and Sunday, April 10th.  He says the regulations are different for youth that decide to go turkey hunting.

Schlader says youth aged 16 and younger do not need a license or have completed the hunter education course.  He adds they do have to be with an adult during the youth season.

Bob Bellmer, Park Ranger with the Washington County Conservation Board says there are steps you can take to stay safe while hunting as well.  He says to not wear the colors of the flag because they are the same colors as a turkey’s head, be next to a big tree when calling a turkey, and know your target before attempting to take a shot.

Bellmer says to avoid wearing the blaze orange because a turkey will see you approaching.  To find out more about hunter safety tips and regulations, see pages 36 and 37 here.
