Two people are dead after a standoff in Keokuk County.  Just before noon yesterday, the Keokuk County Sheriff and two deputies arrived at 18327 249th Street in rural Keokuk County near Sigourney.  They went to the residence to speak with 53 year old Jeff Krier regarding an incident the night before.

Krier shot and wounded Keokuk County Sheriff Deputy Eric Stein who later died.  Sheriff Jeff Shipley and Deputy Casey Hannah retreated and immediately radioed for assistance.

Agencies from other communities and counties responded and after a standoff, Krier exited his residence at 2:50 pm armed with weapons.  Members of the Iowa State Patrol Tactical Unit fired on Krier who was shot and killed.

Deputy Stein had served the Keokuk County Sheriff’s Office since July 2000.
