The Washington County Community Organization Active in Disasters (COAD) in conjunction with the United Way of Johnson County held an Emergency Volunteer Center (EVC) training earlier this week.  Washington County Public Health Program Director Chrystal Woller says COAD was established to coordinate volunteers to a task where their skills and abilities can be used best.  Woller says a simulation was also conducted to learn how to set up Washington County’s emergency volunteer center and the policies and procedures that would go with that.

She adds 26 people attended the class and were trained on various jobs, including greeting, interviewing and matching volunteers and taking requests from various agencies and individuals in need of assistance.  Woller says COAD and EVC would be used in a case like what has happened in Joplin, Missouri where spontaneous volunteers would show up to offer help.
