Construction work to replace a Kalona bridge is set to begin Monday.  The “A” Avenue Bridge will be closed as crews will build a new bridge over the west drainage ditch.  The road is expected to remain closed for two months.

The contract for the bridge replacement was awarded to Iowa Bridge and Culvert of Washington for almost $487,000.  Washington County Engineer David Patterson says eighty percent of the project’s bill is covered by the federal government’s city bridge replacement program.

He adds the bridge will be similar to the “C” Avenue bridge that was replaced in 1998.  The Washington County Engineer’s office will provide inspection services for the project in a joint agreement with the City of Kalona.
