Governor Terry Branstad has declared May egg month in Iowa, which is a chance to recognize egg farmers in the area.  Farmer’s Hen House is a local egg farm, but it is unique by state standards.  The Kalona farm is the only one of its kind in the state – it produces eggs from non-caged chickens, and also organic eggs.  Manager Ryan Miller says they distribute eggs all over the Midwest, and also to area supermarkets like Hy-Vee.

According to the Iowa Egg Council, there are over 60 million laying hens in the state of Iowa producing nearly 15 billion eggs per year, and the Iowa egg industry contributes 1.8 billion dollars in total sales and 7,600 jobs to Iowa.
