Seat Belt Safety Program Returns

The Iowa Department of Public Safety and the Washington County Sheriff’s Office want to make sure you arrive safely to your destination over the next two weeks.  Beginning Monday, law enforcement officials will be on the roadways making sure motorists are buckled up and are obeying all traffic laws through Iowa’s special Traffic Enforcement Program (sTEP).  Law enforcement agencies want to get out a strong message of “Click It or Ticket.”

Randy Hunefeld with the Iowa Department of Public Safety says that while there are more motorists on the roads during the day, the chances of a fatality from not wearing seat belts at night is higher.  He says that just by wearing your seat belt, your odds of surviving a crash and reducing the extent of your injuries is increased by 50%.

The sTEP program begins Monday and runs through June 5th.
