Warm and dry weather this week has allowed work to resume on improving this year’s crop yield. Heavy rains and saturated ground have caused Washington County farmers a lot of headaches this month, as applicators get washed away in fields the threat of losing crops increases. Rob Stout, a grower in West Chester, says these are the conditions needed for this year’s crop to rebound.
According to a report by the Iowa Department of Agriculture, parts of Washington County and southeast Iowa have been drenched by some 15 to 20 inches of rain since April 1, making this year’s growing season a very tense one for farmers. The report says 56 percent of Iowa’s crops are in good condition, while just 24 percent have been seen in excellent condition.
