Efforts to renovate and expand a Kalona apartment complex are finally complete.  The U.S. Department of Agriculture Rural Development provided $220,000 in funding to assist with the construction of five two-bedroom units at Kalona Valley Apartments.  The additions were unveiled Saturday at a ceremony at the complex.  Three of the new units will be occupied by the end of this week.  The other two are available for rent.

State Director of Rural Development Bill Menner says the goal of these projects is to provide affordable living in rural towns for people who can’t afford a home.  He says most of the department’s funds go toward projects in southeast Iowa compared to other parts of the state , including two new projects to be announced in the coming days.

Rural Development currently provides financing for 500 multi-family housing projects in rural Iowa.
