The Washington Demons area headed to the state baseball tournament in Des Moines. Washington went to Ottumwa last night to play Centerville in sub-state action and after two scoreless innings the Demons got on the board in the top of the third. Colton Covington led off the innings with a double, Austin Knupp followed with a base hit. Covington scored on an Anthony Ossman base hit to right. Knupp came in from third on a dropped third strike with Weatherman at the plate, as soon as the catcher threw to first Knupp broke for the plate and scored. The Demons scored two runs in each of the next two innings to put them up 6-0 going into the top of the sixth and they would catch fire in the sixth. Washington batted around and scored 9 runs on six hits including an Anthony Ossman ground rule double that scored a run, Jake Redlinger triple that scored two runs, and Austin Knupp had a three run blast that went over the fence that is 320 down the line. The Demons won 16-0. Brad Weatherman started on the hill and threw four innings, gave up four hits, struck out 2 and walked 1. Colin Steele came on in the fifth and threw two innings struck out one, and didn’t give up any hits. The Demons improve to 29-7 while Centerville ends their season at 11-28.

Washington qualifies for the state tournament for the first time since 1998. It will be their first trip to Principal Park and they will be the number three seed. The Demons will open playing ADM, Adel on Tueseday at 6:00-pm. ADM, Adel beat Chariton 7-4.
