While participants in this year’s Washington County Fair have been fortunate not to lose any large animals, officials with the Washington County Extension say area farmers who have lost livestock from recent severe weather or the heat may be eligible for payment through the Livestock Indemnity Program.  Gene Mohling with the Extension says the program provides benefits to livestock producers for deaths caused by extreme weather.

He says payment for losses is determined by calculations by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, but usually comes to about 75 percent of the average fair market value of the livestock.

Washington County producers who have suffered livestock deaths can contact the Farm Service Agency in Washington for more information.
