Police say they don’t suspect foul play in the death of a Fairfield man.  According to the Fairfield Police Department, a call was received around 10:30 Thursday morning that there was a male subject in the alley behind the Landmark Inn.

Upon arrival, police discovered the body of 45 year-old John Streitmatter (Strite-matter) in an apartment at the back of the Landmark Inn that had an entrance to the alley.  Officials say it appeared he had hit his head.  Streitmatter was pronounced dead at the scene by Jefferson County ambulance personnel.

The cause of death is unknown at this time, but an autopsy is being performed by the Iowa State Medical Examiner’s Office.  Police say there were no suspicious circumstances surrounding Streitmatter’s death.

Assisting with the investigation are the Fairfield Police Department, The Iowa State Medical Examiner’s Office, the Jefferson County Ambulance Service, and the Jefferson County Attorney’s Office.
