A number of area farms and landowners have been honored at the Iowa State Fair by the Iowa Department of Agriculture. One farm each from Henry, Jefferson, and Louisa Counties and ten Iowa County farms were recognized as Century Farms, or being in operation for at least 100 years.
Two Louisa County farms and one Washington County farm earned the title of Heritage Farm, meaning they have been around for at least 150 years.
Farms must consist of at least 40 acres.
Iowa Agriculture Secretary Bill Northey announced this year’s honorees at a ceremony at the fair. The Iowa Department of Agriculture has sponsored the Century Farm program since 1976, and on its 30th anniversary in 2006, the department instituted the Heritage Farm program.
