The Washington County Board of Supervisors passed resolutions to abate some property taxes as part of their meeting yesterday.  Washington County Treasurer Jeff Garret says the taxes abated are for two properties where a manufactured home was moved to a different location.

He notes there is a law in Iowa that states owners of manufactured homes that move them from property must pay an estimated tax for the next year before moving them.

This causes the difference in taxes when properties are reassessed the following year.  Garrett says tax abatement “wipes” the tax liability off of the books and each taxing authority receives less in taxes when they are abated.

The total amount of the taxes was $186.  The Supervisors passed a separate resolution for each tax abatement.
