The ISU Extension is offering a field day next month assisting area growers who are enrolled in the Conservation Reserve Program, or CRP.  Ag Engineer Greg Brenneman says many bids in this year’s CRP included putting native grasses or native pollinator habitat on parts of CRP acres in the area.

He says the field day will help landowners learn more about getting good establishment of the native grasses.  Brenneman says native grasses are slower to establish than many cool weather grasses farmers normally use for haying and grazing.

He says with proper planning, seeding, and weed control, an excellent yield can be established in the first year.

The field day takes place at the Southeast Iowa Research and Demonstration Farm south of Crawfordsville on Tuesday, September 16th.
