Heat Brings Concerns over Lawn and Garden Care

The Washington County Extension is offering some tips on how to keep your lawn fresh and hydrated during summer heat.  Nancy Adrian with the Extension says gardeners have two options when it comes to watering grass and plants in hot and dry weather.  She says you can hold off on watering the grass and allow it to go dormant.

If gardeners take this route, she says to apply about an inch of water to grass after it’s been dormant for six weeks.  Then water again seven days later, and the grass should be green after the second watering.  She says you can also water the turfgrass during dry weather to maintain a green, growing lawn.

The best time to water a lawn is in the early morning hours of 5:00 to 9:00.  Adrian says watering early in the morning allows water to soak deeply into the soil with little water loss to evaporation.

She says watering lawns later in the day could increase the risk of diseases.  For more information on lawn care during summer heat, contact the Washington County Extension.
