Officials with the city of Kalona have been studying the sidewalks in the town, and are looking to apply for a grant that could help rebuild many of them.  City Administrator Ryan Schlabaugh says the Safe Walks to School study has been conducted by the city of Kalona in conjunction with Washington County Public Health, Mid-Prairie Community School District, and the Washington County Engineer’s office.

He says the study will help determine where the city could use new sidewalks to make Kalona more “walkable.”  Schlabaugh says Iowa State University also got community members involved in assessing the sidewalks.

The city is planning on taking the results of the study and could potentially apply for an I-Walk grant, which is given out to Iowa cities to improve their “walkability.”
