The Washington Historic Preservation Commission is looking for volunteers to help research Washington’s history.  Chairwoman Mary Patterson says those volunteers will be part of an effort to nominate the downtown square area as an historic district.  She says two buildings downtown, the Mills Seed Company and the State Theater, could also be added to the National Register of Historic Places.

Patterson says if the area ends up being nominated for the honor, building owners would receive income tax credits to assist with any work they would want to do on their property.

She says the commission is looking for volunteers who have an interest in Washington’s history, and are able to read microfilm records and photocopies.

Patterson says to contact City Hall for more information.
