Most government offices and many businesses are closed today in observance of Labor Day.  The day originated in 1882 in New York City and was first celebrated in accordance with the plans of the Central Labor Union.

Congress established Labor Day as a legal holiday on the first day of September in 1894 and the holiday was first celebrated nationally and in Washington County in 1909.

Many people consider today the unofficial end to the summer.
