Big plays and 3rd down conversions enabled Mediapolis to pull away from Mid-Prairie and give the Golden Hawks their first loss in district play 35-7 last night. In a game heard on KCII and KCIIradio.com Mid-Prairie played the #5 ranked Bulldogs to a scoreless tie until the 6:28 mark of period number two when quarterback Jesse Ertz found Wil Janssen from 47 yards out on third down to make the score 7-0, five minutes later on another 3rd down Mediapolis found the endzone when Ertz connected with wide out Taylor Zippe with under 90 seconds to go in the first half. Out of the locker room the Golden Hawk offense went three and out while Mediapolis put together it’s most impressive drive of the night a 12 play 61 yard march capped by a three yard Janssen touchdown run. Mid-Prairie got back in it with a 42 yard touchdown strike from Reid Miller to Aaron Kurtz on their next possession cutting the lead to 21-7. However, the Mediapolis offense continued converting third downs including a 3rd and 18 on their next drive en route to their 4th TD of the night making it 27-7 and the Bulldogs finished the scoring at the 6:16 mark of the 4th with their fifth touchdown of the night. Mediapolis was 11 of 18 on third down for the night. Mid-Prairie was led by Jaemin Powell’s 45 yards on seven carries, Reid Miller was seven for 12 through the air for 103 yards and a score. Mediapolis’ all district candidate quarterback Jesse Ertz was as good as advertised going 16 for 25 for 304 yards and three scores. With the loss Mid-Prairie falls to 3-2 overall and 2-1 in district play with West Burlington/Notre Dame making the trip to Wellman next week.
