Recent dry weather has area farmers concerned about their timing of this year’s harvest, but a report by the Iowa Department of Agriculture still suggests progress. A handful of rainy days in the last month have resulted in some encouraging signs from the area corn crop. The report says corn in the southeast region classified as mature stands at 67 percent, which is short of last year but ahead of the five year average.
Greg Thessen with the Department of Agriculture says 10 percent of corn in the southeast region is in excellent condition, 45 percent is currently in good condition, and 29 percent is in fair condition.
Corn in excellent condition has decreased significantly in August and September due to the dry weather.
Brian Wood with Vision Ag in Ainsworth says farmers have told them this year’s local harvest isn’t going to be as strong as originally forecasted.
