Water Main Break and Boil Advisory in Effect in Wellman

The City of Wellman has experienced a major water main break. The break was located on 8th Avenue north of 11th Street and has also resulted in a boil advisory being issued. The DNR issued the boil advisory as a precautionary measure as a result of low or no pressure.
Water samples taken yesterday came back negative and results from another test today will come back tomorrow. The results of today’s test will determine if the advisory will need to continue.
City Clerk Donna Wade says the main was repaired earlier today. KCII will bring you more information as it becomes official and to learn more about what can be done during a boil advisory, look at this story on kciiradio.com.
What to do during a boil order:
Residents should boil water used for drinking or cooking, brushing teeth, food preparation or any other purpose involving human consumption. City water may still be used for bathing.
Boiling destroys bacteria and disease-causing organisms, which may be in the water. Water should be brought to a boil, boiled one minute and then allowed to cool before using.
More information on disinfecting water is available on the EPA Safe Drinking Water Hotline at (800) 426-4791 or from the city at (319) 646-2154. You may also call the Washington County Public Health for additional information at 319-653-7758 .
Residents should continue to boil their water until the City notifies them that water is meeting standards and is safe to drink. The DNR will lift the boil advisory after all samples have tested negative for the presence of bacteria.
