A former city leader has died in Wellman.  Max Lewis graduated from Wellman High School in 1948, and he served in the United States Coast Guard from 1948 to 1951.  He served on the Washington County School Board, Mid-Prairie School Board and was a founding member of the Kirkwood Community College Board.

Lewis also served on the of Wellman City Council from 1992 to 1999 and was Mayor of Wellman from 2000 to 2005.  Memorial services for 81 year old Max Lewis of Wellman will be 10:30 Monday at the Asbury Methodist Church in Wellman.  Burial will be in the Wellman Cemetery.
