Its harvest time in Iowa and grain bin safety is a concern. Tim Wells of the Washington Fire department says to avoid entering the bins unless absolutely necessary. If you do need to enter the grain bin, Wells says to not do it alone, have someone outside the bin with you.

He also recommends being anchored with a rope and having a rod to test the stability of the grain. The Washington Fire Department has recently purchased a rescue tube for grain bin accidents, but reminds us that general safety is always the best choice.
