The start to Mid-Prairie’s 2011 homecoming football game was the perfect script but Albia rallied and took a hard fought 30-21 victory Friday night. In a game heard on KCII and KCIIradio.com Mid-Prairie jumped out to a 14-0 lead in the first four minutes on a 53 yard touchdown connection from Reid Miller to Dylan Wertz on the first play from scrimmage and two plays after a Steven Jones fumble recovery, Jones romped in from 41 yards out. Albia would tie it with a pair of second quarter touchdown runs by workhorse Cole Spurgin, the second coming on the final play of the first half. The Golden Hawks would cash in another Blue Demon turnover to take a 3rd quarter lead, Jaemin Powell recovered a fumble on the Albia 19 yard line and five plays later he punched it in from one yard out. The Blue Demons would find an answer five minutes later when quarterback Brett Leshen finished a dominating 11 play 80 yard Albia drive with a 19 yard touchdown run up the middle. The defenses took over for most of the 4th quarter and Mid-Prairie looked to have regained momentum when Jones blocked an Albia punt with nine minutes left at the Albia 39. The Albia defense held and the offense put together a commanding 13 play 77 yard drive eating up almost all remaining time and giving Albia their first lead of the night on a 25 yard Jordan Crall field goal with 30 seconds remaining. On their last gasp the Golden Hawks called on Reid Miller with 13 seconds remaining in the game. Miller hit Powell over the middle who lateraled to Jones who hurdled a tackler and was run out of bounds at the Albia eight yard line with no time showing on the clock. After a referee conference they added one second back to the clock giving Mid-Prairie’s Austin Errthum the opportunity to tie with a 25 yard field goal. Following a penalty it was a 30 yard kick from the far hash that was blocked by Albia as the Blue Demons win 24-21. Mid-Prairie is now 4-3 on the season 3-2 in district play and will be at Sigourney-Keota next Friday in a game you can hear on KCIIradio.com with pregame at 7:15 and kickoff at 7:30.
