State May Take Over Monitoring No Child Left Behind Compliance

Monitoring No Child Left Behind compliance could be shifting from the federal government to the state in the near future. Mid-Prairie Superintendent Mark Schneider says the federal government is considering a waiver program, where a state can submit a plan that would need federal approval. The plan would outline how the state will monitor compliance to No Child Left Behind.
Schneider says this may allow the state to test at different grades than federal requirements and even allow other tests such as the ACT to satisfy testing requirements in the upper grades. He says the state is currently working on a plan to submit to the federal government.
Such a plan would need to be approved by the legislature first so the change would be at least a year out, if not longer.
