The latest round of unemployment figures has been released by the Iowa Workforce Development and Washington County’s rate dropped for a second month. The rate in the County dropped to 4.5%, one-third of a percent lower than August.
Washington County has a little under 12,000 people in the workforce and Washington Economic Development Group Director Ed Raber says while it is good to have a low rate, there are a number of employers in the Washington County area with openings but are having difficulties filling those positions.
He says this is due to the tight labor market and there are not as many applicants as employers would like. Raber says one way to increase employment in the County is to offer more housing in the County.
Iowa’s unemployment rate still remains three percent lower when compared to national unemployment rates.
