President Obama has raised the issue of drug shortages across the country. The drugs aren’t in short supply because of limits in manufacturing but the problem is that the drugs aren’t very profitable. Many patients have had to purchase similar drugs at a much higher cost because of a shortage of a cheaper drug. Sammie Peterson of NuCara Pharmacy in Washington says retail pharmacies don’t have nearly as much trouble with drug shortages as hospital pharmacies do. She says usually they can find an alternative drug if they run short. She says they have seen some shortages in stimulant drugs, it didn’t cause them too much of a problem, but the problem comes and goes so it’s hard to tell when they have an actual shortage. She adds there are always some drug shortages, it just depends on if the drug has a reasonable replacement.
