There are reports of dangerous arsenic levels in some towns across Iowa. Aaron Shumaker, Public Works Director in Wellman, says he hasn’t heard of any arsenic contaminating city water supplies in the area. Still, private well owners who are not using a city water system need to be careful. Arsenic can contaminate the groundwater these private wells tap into. Russ Tell, who runs the Iowa DNR’s Private Well Program, says since arsenic is tasteless and odorless, you’ll have to get a water testing kit and submit it to a lab that’s certified to do drinking water testing. He says you could also call you county sanitarian. They might be able to give you information on any groundwater contamination. Prolonged use of water contaminated with arsenic can lead to many health problems including cancer.
