When the Washington Demon girls basketball takes to court this upcoming season, they will have a little different offensive approach. Head Coach Phil Long says they started practices last week and with a new offensive system they started putting in this past summer they won’t be very dependent on a point guard. He says whoever is near the ball is going to handle it, freeing up the back court players and others to release down the court earlier rather than having to stay behind to bring up the ball. He says he’s been looking at a system like this for a while and it’s one that the Iowa Hawkeye women’s team runs. Long has been to several Hawkeye practices to see how they run it. He was pleased with his team’s ability to learn and run seventeen different plays last season, but he felt there were some instances where his team was hampered by running plays and this will allow them to play free and loose. The Demons are scheduled to got to the Mid-Prairie Jamboree on Friday and then open the season a week from this evening hosting Eddyville-Blakesburg.
