The Iowa Department of Public Safety and local area law enforcement want to make sure you arrive safely to your destination over the holiday weekend this week.  Starting today, law enforcement officials will be on the roadways making sure motorists are buckled up and are obeying all traffic laws through Iowa’s special Traffic Enforcement Program (sTEP).  Randy Hunefeld with the Iowa Department of Public Safety says last year during the Thanksgiving sTEP project, 13 people were killed in Iowa.

He adds while there are more motorists on the roads during the day, the chances of a fatality from not wearing seat belts at night is higher.  Hunefeld says that just by wearing your seat belt, your odds of surviving a crash and reducing the extent of your injuries is increased by 50%.  The sTEP programs runs today through Sunday.
