Four area girls basketball teams took part in one of the unofficial kickoffs to High School basketball season in Wellman last night. Mid-Prairie hosted it’s annual girls basketball jamboree, Washington, Mid-Prairie, IMS and Highland all participated. Each scrimmage consisted of one half and does not count toward each teams record. Washington opened the night taking on #2 in class 4A Iowa City West. The Demons trailed by just two points going into the second quarter before falling 41-20, Sydney Greiner led Washington with 12 points including three of four shooting from beyond the arc. Highland and Iowa City Regina battled in game two that saw the Regals come out on top 26-13. Highland was led by four points from Emily Wieland. Matchup #3 saw Aaron Gingerich make his head coaching debut as the IMS girls battle West Branch. IMS opened up an early 9-2 lead before West Branch gained control for the 24-13 win. Riley Schmieder and Amber Davis led the way for Iowa Mennonite School with four points apiece. In the nightcap host school Mid-Prairie finished with a 13-13 tie against Center Point-Urbana. Mariah Swartzentruber led the Golden Hawks with four points, Taylor Foster hit two free throws with under a minute remaining to force the tie. Mid-Prairie will host their boys basketball jamboree on Tuesday.
