The American Cancer Society and the American Lung Association are encouraging people all over the state to quit smoking, if only for one day, today as part of the Great American Smoke Out. Denise Conrad, with the Mid-West Division of the American Cancer Society says they have a theme this year of “creating a world with more birthdays”. They say that people who quit smoking can add up to eight more years of their life. You can get information and tips on quitting smoking at your local public health offices and in events held throughout Iowa. They had asked the Iowa Gaming Commission to ban smoking in casinos like Riverside Casino and Golf Resort. That request was denied; the commission said they think adults should be able to make those decisions for themselves in venues meant for people over 21 years of age. You can find out more information about the Great American Smoke out by listening to In Touch with Southeast Iowa today, where we talk with Denise Conrad about the benefits of quitting and some of the events for the Great American Smoke Out.
