We had our first snow, which means its time to get ready for winter driving. The Iowa Department of Transportation has some tips to help you through the winter. First you should do a thorough check of your vehicle before driving. Check your lights to make sure you will be visible in a storm, and check your tires to make sure the treads haven’t worn down too much. They also recommend completely removing the snow and ice from your mirrors and windshield. Even a small amount of snow or ice can block your view of another vehicle. Be sure to check the road for ice, a good rule is if your mirrors are iced over, the road probably is too. When driving, start slowly to get a feel for the road conditions, take turns slowly, and leave plenty of room around other drivers. County Engineer David Patterson says the road crews and equipment are ready to take on the winter storms. They have their plows and salt ready, but it’s always best to be prepared for hazardous conditions. Get prepared each day by listening to KCII. We can tell you the weather and road conditions first, fast and accurately.
