Washington, IA – The Washington basketball teams played a double-header last night right here on KCII radio. The girls got the night started off with their sixth-straight W, a 48-16 win over Ft. Madison. Despite missing several open shots and putting together one of their worst shooting nights of the season, the Demons stepped up the defense and head coach Phil Long hopes they learned a valuable lesson
“Great teaching game for our kids because you can always play defense. There’s going to be nights when you can’t throw it in the ocean and collectively we just had a whole bunch that couldn’t throw it in the ocean tonight. We had awesome looks in our rotation (the shots) just didn’t go in but at the same time we hunkered down defensively.”
Lauren Vittetoe finished with a double-double, Lauren Kimball scored 10 as well. The girls head into the break with a 7-1 record, 3-0 in Southeast Conference play.
The Demon boys started the night slow as they looked to stay perfect in conference play. Demons battled back in the second quarter to take a 31-28 lead into the locker room. Some energetic play from the Washington defense jump-started the offense to start the second half including a Brock Kimball jam for two of his team-high 17, leading four players in double-figures. Colin Steele pitched in 14, Dillon Redlinger scored 13 and Jake Redlinger 11. Kyle Roder scored nine as the Demons ride the second half momentum to a 70-59 win and head to the break at 6-3, 3-0 in the southeast.
