When snow covers the ground across southeast Iowa, some birds will still be in the area looking for food.  Washington County Extension Commercial Horticulture Field Specialist Patrick O’Malley says some birds who do not fly south for the winter build warmer nests.  He says birds like cardinals and robins will stay throughout the winter.

Birds that remain like to feed on hackberry and crabapple trees and some shrubs will also provide food as well.  O’Malley says if you like to watch birds you can provide food for them in feeders.

He says many types of seed that can be purchased will inform you on what type of birds they attract.  O’Malley adds that providing food for birds does help them survive through the winter months.
