Solon, IA – The Mid-Prairie Golden Hawks finished out the pre-holiday part of their campaign with a double header at rival Solon Thursday night. In a double header heard on KCII and kciiradio.com the Mid-Prairie girls got the night off to a good, and exciting start with a 31-29 win in overtime. Coach Marc Pennington’s message to his team has been to take the next step this season and they did so Thursday night, posting their first non-conference win in nearly two seasons by knocking off the lady Spartans.
Mid-Prairie led most of the first half in a defensive battle before Solon edged ahead with a 13-10 lead going into the locker room. Not much changed in the third period, turnovers and good defense saw Solon take an 18-14 lead into the final eight minutes. The Golden Hawks opened the 4th quarter with a 10-0 run to build a 24-18 advantage and led 25-22 before Solon’s Kristen Purdy would hit a three on a set play to tie the score. Mid-Prairie had a chance to win it in regulation but an Erika Murphy jumper was just long as time expired with the score 25-25. Head coach Marc Pennington knew who’d win it Wednesday night when he joined us on the PM Sports Page.

“… so I think what you’re going to see is the first one to thirty might win.”

In overtime Solon scored first but Mid-Prairie rallied for a 29-27 lead on a Mallory McArtor basket before the Spartans squared it 29. After back-to-back turnovers Solon had the basketball needing to go the length of the floor in 4.3 seconds. Spartan guard Riley Smith threw the ball into the waiting arms of Mid Prairie’s Meghan Redlinger at half court who dribbled to the elbow and won it with a jumper as time expired in a 31-29 overtime win.  ’First one to thirty’.  It was Redlinger’s second game winner in overtime in the last 10 days. McArtor led Mid-Prairie with 12 points. The Mid-Prairie girls are now 4-4 overall.

On the boys’ side of the double header, Solon raced out to a 24-2 lead at the end of the first quarter and built that to 43-11 going into the locker room. Mid-Prairie came out fighting to stay away from the 35 point continuous clock rule and held off Solon till the final 90 seconds of the 3rd quarter. The Spartans ran away with a 63-27 win. Mid-Prairie was led by Senior Jaemin Powell who finished with seven points. The Golden Hawks enter the Holiday break at 1-7 overall.
