Winter weather will soon be here and there are things you can do to prevent damage to trees and shrubs.  Mark Vitosh, District Forester with Iowa Department of Natural Resources says the only thing you can do right now is to try and shake snow off of trees and shrubs after it falls.  He says it is almost impossible to protect your shrubs and trees from ice and you should not try to shake the ice off from shrubs or trees.

Vitosh adds one thing that can be done is proper pruning and care through out the year to strengthen the tree.  He says wrapping should only be done on plants that might get damaged from rabbits.  Vitosh says it is still unclear on whether wrapping actually works to protect trees and shrubs.
