The Mid-Prairie Golden Hawks fell in boys and girls basketball to Iowa City Regina Friday night in a Cedar Valley conference doubleheader in Wellman.

In games heard on KCII and KCIIradio.com the girls led off the action with a defensive battle. Mid-Prairie scored just four first half points and made just one shot from the floor. The Golden Hawk defense kept Mid-Prairie in the game holding Regina scoreless for a five plus minute stretch in the 2nd quarter. Mid-Prairie began the second half on an 11-0 run to cut the lead to just eight before the Regals Jenna Lehman hit a three to take back momentum. Lehman led all scorers with 20 points, Mariah Swartzentruber led the Golden Hawks with 11, 10 of those coming during Mid-Prairie’s second half run. With the loss the Golden Hawks are now 1-3 overall and 1-1 in the Cedar Valley Conference

In the boys contest the Golden Hawks gave #9 Iowa City Regina all they wanted before falling 47-39. Mid-Prairie trailed just 21-16 at the halftime break of the defensive battle but the Golden Hawks would not get closer than 33-30 in the second half. The Golden Hawks put together a great defensive effort, holding the Regals well below their season average. Mid-Prairie would make one final run in the last 90 seconds to get within five one more time before Regina put the game away with free throws. The Golden Hawks were led by 14 points from Jaemin Powell. Mid-Prairie falls to 0-4 and will continue their search for their first win next week with double headers at Tipton on Tuesday and at Durant on Friday with both sets of games on KCII.
