State Officials are pushing parents to warn their kids about the dangers of synthetic drugs. The most well known of these drugs is called K-2. In June last year an Iowa teenager took his own life after smoking K-2 and his parents have been fighting against these drugs ever since. But there are other drugs that fall into this category. These drugs have been made illegal in the last year under broad legislation that covers every drug not cleared by the FDA. The makers of these drugs have found ways around this, selling the drugs as potpourri or labeling them as not meant for human consumption. Deputy Eric Weber, with the Louisa/Washington County Drug task force, says they usually aren’t sold anywhere in Washington County, but there are places to find them in nearby Iowa City. He says the drugs are dangerous because they are not prepared in sanitary conditions and labeled with dosage instructions like any other drug that is cleared by the FDA.
