Pella, IA – It was a big weekend in Pella for the Washington wrestling team who trailed by 10 points entering the final round but rallied to take first place in the nine-team tournament Saturday, posting 221 points to edge Davis County by nine. Head coach Brent Van Weelden said the team got off to a quick start, getting extra points for some early pins that set the stage for the day.
“We only lost nine matches the entire day. That’s one of the best outings we’ve had in a long time. We kind of got the ball rolling, kind of fed off each other… it was a very good day for the guys.”
The team put seven wrestlers into the finals. Jacob Green, Parker Turner, and Matt Grote all made it to the final round while four others went on to take the championship. Fletcher Green took first in the 106 pound class and Tristan Pohren finished on top as well in 113. Mitchel Hora was the champ at 132 pounds and Tanner Knupp sealed a win for himself at 138. Next match is Thursday against Fairfield before traveling to Mediapolis over the weekend.
