Iowa’s Legislative session for 2012 will begin on Monday. One of the issues our local representatives would like to address is commercial property taxes. Both Representative Jarad Klein and Senator Sandy Greiner say they would like to discuss this issue in the upcoming year. Representative Klein says adressing this issue would help with economic development and job creation.
Senator Greiner says the issue would need to be handled delicately because the state sets the rules for collecting property taxes, but the money goes to counties and local communities, and if commercial property taxes are lowered it could increase homeowner and farm property taxes.
KCII will be following this issue and others through the 2012 legislative session. For more information on property taxes and the state government, listen to our In Touch program on Friday.
