Golden Hawks Split With Knights

Wellman, IA - The Mid-Prairie boys and girls basketball teams opened the 2012 portion of the schedule with a Cedar Valley Conference double header Tuesday night in Wellman. In games heard on AM and FM KCII and KCIIradio.com the Mid-Prairie girls did it again with defense, holding North Cedar scoreless in the first and fourth periods en route to a 29-18 win. Offense was tough to come by for the Golden Hawks as well who lead just 4-0 after the first quarter and 15-11 at halftime. The Golden Hawks were led by 11 points from Erika Murphy seven of those coming in the second half and Mariah Swartzentruber’s 10 points, eight of them in the first half. With the win Mid-Prairie stands above .500 for the first time this year at 5-4 and 4-1 in the Cedar Valley Conference.
In boys action, #7 North Cedar began the game on an 11-0 run and left Wellman with a 58-36 win in the nightcap. Mid-Prairie would find themselves trailing by 8 to 11 points most of the second quarter but were unable to get over the hump and cut down the lead. The Knights were a tough matchup for the Golden Hawks with all state candidate Jordan Hay at 6’6 and center Josh Sander at 6’10” while Mid-Prairie has no one over 6’3”. Hay led all scorers with 28, Mid-Prairie was led by Jamein Powell, Alex McKee Crown and Elliot Runciman who each had eight. With the loss the Golden Hawks fall to 1-8 on the season and 1-4 in conference. The boys and girls teams will be back in action Friday at West Liberty.
